Faraday's Journal

I don't usually geek out like this but just needed to today. Here are some screen captures of the journal of Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) from "Lost" last night.

The reason this interests me is that the pattern in Faraday's journal looks strikingly similar to the diagram on the back of the Hatch door. Compare:

Blast Door Hatch from Lost.Cubit.Net

The two images overlaid directly didn't really line up in the above configuration (vertical). Here are two tracings of the lines from both:

Doing some flipping, rotating, and rescaling makes them line up just about perfectly. It doesn't take much re-jiggering at all to make this:

Faraday's Journal Lines Up With Hatch Map

Here's the same shape from Daniel's journal laid over a map of the island that may or may not be 100% accurate. Some things seem to line up exactly -- The Flame, Staff, The Pearl -- and others not so much. This leaves Hydra out in the cold but I'm not sure how much of a "Hatch" this is versus a gateway.

The thing that I find very interesting is the alignment of one circle with the mysterious crater.

Faraday's Journal over Island Map

Another map showed up in "The Other Woman" episode. It's probably about as accurate as the above.

Interesting, but, i tried to put the two drawings more accurate together in Photoshop, but i could not make it a perfect match. It is however an interesting theorie, that Faraday has come close to the islands 'electro-magnetic' map.

Woah... cool.

Good catch, you're on to something here man.

dude, that is a awesome map. It will make the lost writers roll over in their graves. You should add "The Tempest" to your map as "unknown station" cause I would wager that that is what it is.

On which parts of the map have there been 'monster' encounters? Anyone have some idea of it's reach?

Need to remind you: like others did, you're placing the Hydra at the exact opposite position - precisely where the Looking Glass should be, in fact, which is why it doesn't show up anywhere on the overlay - it's to the NORTH-NORTHWEST of Othersville and ever since we first saw Danielle's map in Season 1, many people have failed to recognize that it was drawn approaching from the NORTH, not the south - it's another reason why the raft was intercepted by Tom's crew where it was; otherwise the raft would've likely discovered the Hydra island as a result of the locally engineered ocean (and magnetic?) currents.....

As for just where The Tempest and the Orchid are, it's safe to guess that the former is somewhere to the northeast of the beach camp - given the shoreline in relation to Jack and Juliet's "The Other Woman" embrace - and the Orchid in very close proximity, represented on the Blast Door Map by the 2 remaining, unknown hatches in that area.....

One last observation: given how much time seemed to have elapsed between Sayid, Locke and Kate leaving the destroyed Flame station in "Par Avion" and reaching Othersville's perimeter fence, I'm fairly certain that whoever from Production designed the Blast Door Map unknowingly made a retroactive continuity error in indicating that the Flame was further south than the Staff, and in fact, where the Flame exists in LOST reality still really hasn't been determined, if representations of the Island are accurate - while they ARE getting closer with each reveal, it may be impossible to create a really reliable depiction due to Hawaiian and production logistics.....as for where the Tempest is, I'd say it's very close to where the Arrow is presently indicated as being located on your map. Sorry for 3 posts in a row - kinda making up for LOST time!

Actually, one last post - and then I'll step away from the comment box! Don't know if anyone else remembers this, but there were some really bizarre photos posted (sometime before Season 3 started) of a building that appeared to be on one of the sand flat inlets, probably near where where Desmond's boat was located - if Faraday's southernmost circle does equate with a Crater existing east-southeast of the beach camp, then this building may have been part of the original plan for Season 3 or later, possibly linked to the manipulation of volcanic forces yet to be revealed which may also facilitate the Island's properties in some way.....said photos disappeared shortly after with no explanation from ANYONE as to what they might represent.....

A quick analysis of just which station each circle could represent, using direction codes:

NW: Othersville; directly SE of that, either The Flame or Arrow (likely the former as I seem to recall the Tailies weren't far from the water when stumbling upon the Arrow and closer to their crash site, and so SW of that circle although not linked.....)

NE (directly east of Othersville): hard to say for sure, but either the Orchid - more likely, based upon travel time in "The Other Woman" - or the Tempest, depending upon whether or not the former is underground or otherwise not immediately visible on the surface.....and so the Tempest would be slightly SE of that and closer to the island's eastern shore.....

SE: Unquestionably the Looking Glass station, given where Sayid and Hurley's cable was found; SW of that, either the Swan or, if corresponding to a Crater, another as-yet-unrevealed station; N of that, either the Pearl or Swan; slightly NE of that is either the Staff, or the Pearl, although if the Blast Door Map IS an accurate rendering in some aspects, then it can only be the Staff since the Pearl is depicted as larger than any other station - hence, no unknown building on the Sand Flats inlet......

As for the Hydra, because it is somehow cloaked itself, nobody after a certain point in time - probably the Purge or Incident - knew it even existed, including Faraday; no corresponding circle to the N-NW of Othersville - which suggests that Widmore was similarly unaware.....

Your maps don't have to be 100% accurate. There are other hatches undiscovered I'm sure. I bet the arrangement of the hatches was laid out according to "special" areas of the island. Even Ben's house could be one of the circles on the map since he entered that old cave to summon Smokey. And Faraday's map may be incomplete. You definitely hit on something.

I wish there was a more accurate/updated map of the island for me to overlay those wires. Does such a thing exist? I'd love to know where the four-toed statue is in relation to everything else.

I also notice, from the original map in Faraday's journal... the ink is blue. What Cesar found last night on Hydra was in black and white... a xerox copy? Did Dharma steal his journal and copy it? And knowing Radzinsky worked for Dharma, he transfers it to the blast door for some reason.
